Own your US accent

HOLLYWOOD IS COMING TO AUSTRALIA! Are you ready?

As the US still grapples with Covid-19, Hollywood is looking at Australia and NZ to shoot. The Australian government has invested heavily in attracting Hollywood to Australia and Aussie actors are seeing a spike in US auditions and this is just the start. So as US opportunities rise for Australian actors the big question is…

HOW GOOD IS YOUR US ACCENT?

Many roles can be lost by a weak US accent. Fantastic actors can be undone by the accent. Some of the problems actors can face are getting in their head, focusing too much on word pronunciation at the cost of performance, get super nervous and anxious, intimidated by the accent and the list goes on and on.

At SAC we want to help actors own their US accent. It is not that difficult an accent and we want to help actors master the accent, get out of their head and enjoy the bevy of cool roles Hollywood offers. If you want this, this is for you.

We are doing a 3hr, one off course with legendary accent coach LINDA NICHOLLS-GIDLEY

Trained as an actor and a theatre voice/accents and dialects specialist, Linda has worked in the Industry for over 20 years. She was accent, dialect and voice teacher at NIDA in Sydney for 7 years and has worked at numerous actor training institutions both in Australia and internationally. She now works freelance across film, television, and theatre.

This year, prior to theatre closures, Linda coached on Pomona, The Boy George, Life is Impossible, A Chorus Line and Is God Is.

In 2019 Linda was dialect coach for: Shrek – The Musical (GFO), Little Miss Sunshine, I’m With Her, Kasama Kita, Good Dog, Baby Doll, Table, Once, Hitler’s Daughter, Mercury Fur, Cypress Ave, Saturday Night Fever, Russian Transport, The last 5 Years, Grounded,  The Crucible, The Rise and Fall of Little Voice, Counting and Cracking and two short films The Hollow and Vincent. She also directed two short plays: Toxic by Maryanne Lynch and You Still Here by Patricia Cornelius. Other Theatre credits include Love, Maggie Stone, The Humans, Torch Song Trilogy, The Walworth Farce, A Girl is a Half-Formed Thing, DNA, and Home Invasion. Linda has also coached for large mainstage productions such as Dreamworks’ How to Train Your Dragon Arena Spectacular, The Bodyguard, Rocky Horror and Dirty Dancing. Film: Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon 2, Jungle, and Book Club. Television: Mary – The Making of a Princess, The Chase Australia. She directed Pramkicker by Sadie Hasler at its Sydney premier in October 2018.

Linda encourages you to go further than simply tuning an accent. She challenges you to unite your own voice with the particularities and peculiarities of each role. It is an organic and creative process based on authenticity that helps bring unique characters to life. – Damian Walshe Howling

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The course is very simple, each actor brings in their own material and performs for Linda. She will make suggestions on your accent and help you find more connection.

The class will be held on Zoom on Tuesday 13th October, 6pm to 9pm

Cost is $80 for the night. $70 FOR CURRENT SAC ENROLLED ACTORS.

THE COURSE IS OPEN ONLY TO EXPERIENCED WORKING ACTORS. PLEASE NO BEGINNERS TO APPLY.

This is a one off course as we expect all actors to have a handle on the accent but want to really work on nailing it. SAC will be launching a longer term course very soon and when we do, priority will be given to actors who participate in this 3hr course.
